BigXthePlug is no stranger to taking a different path. Once a football player with big league dreams, the Dallas native has now become one of the fastest-rising independent artists in hip hop. With over 28 million streams a week, accolades like Amazon’s Breakthrough Artist of the Year, and a fiercely loyal fan base, Big X is redefining what it means to succeed without major label backing.

In a recent appearance on Million Dollaz Worth of Game, the 25-year-old rapper opened up about his journey from the football field to the studio, his independent hustle, and the challenges that come with success—even when it looks like he’s got it all.

The Independent Grind

Unlike many artists navigating the industry, Big X has maintained complete control of his career. He’s partnered with UnitedMasters, a platform that allows independent artists to own their masters and manage their careers without the restrictions of a traditional record deal. For Big X, that independence is everything.

Without the marketing machine of a major label, Big X’s numbers speak for themselves, climbing from 500 monthly listeners to over 30 million streams in just three years.

But for Big X, the key to his success goes beyond just numbers. It’s the infrastructure and small, tight-knit team he’s built around him that keeps the engine running. “I own all my [music],” he said proudly, noting that his deal with UnitedMasters allows him the flexibility to grow without the risks that come with being tied to a major label.

From Athlete to Artist

Long before music became his calling, Big X had his sights set on a different kind of career—football. But after realizing he wasn’t going to make it to the NFL, he found himself at a crossroads. With a newborn to provide for and his life at a standstill, he decided to take a chance on music, spurred on by a friend who had already been on the journey.

“When you doing what you're doing for so long and it's not working, you're kind of willing to try anything,” Big X reflected during the interview. “Especially when you got a newborn child.”

That decision paid off. His breakout moment came fast, and with his distinct voice and commanding presence, Big X quickly captured the attention of fans across the country. But he’s the first to admit that success hasn’t made the journey any easier.

The Weight of Success

Even with streams in the millions and a growing list of achievements, Big X still faces significant challenges. Behind the scenes, the pressure to maintain his momentum weighs heavily on him. He’s candid about the struggles that come with success, particularly the entitlement from friends and family who expect more from him now that he’s made it.

“People feel like I got more than what I got,” Big X explained. “They feel like I got their spot, so now they trying to tear me down.”

Big X credits his grandmother for keeping him grounded during these moments. As his career took off, she was the one constantly checking in, reminding him to take care of himself and not get lost in the chaos. Her voice is even featured on the title track of his latest album, Take Care.

“She the one that was always my comfort. When I’m panicking, it’s getting too much, that’s who I talk to,” Big X shared.

The Take Care Album: Therapy in Sound

The concept behind Take Care isn’t just about staying physically healthy—it’s about protecting his peace in an industry that’s always demanding more. Big X described the album as his therapy, a project where he can be transparent about the struggles he’s facing both personally and professionally.

“Everything I rap about is something I’m doing at that time. Right now, I’m fighting every day,” Big X admitted. “If I didn’t have no kids, I’d have been crashed.”

Despite the pressure, Big X has chosen to embrace his vulnerability. In a genre where artists often portray an image of invincibility, Big X stands out for his raw honesty. “I don’t act like I’m bigger than nobody,” he said. “With this music, it took me a minute to be comfortable enough with it, but this is therapy.”

What’s Next: The Take Care Tour

With his Take Care album making waves, Big X is preparing to hit the road for a 32-city tour—an independent run where he’ll headline without the help of major features or opening acts. For Big X, it’s all about staying true to himself and his team.

“As far as the tour, ain’t no big names on there, it’s just me and my people,” he said proudly. “We going to go rock out.”

It’s a testament to Big X’s confidence and belief in his vision, a reminder that the independent route, though difficult, can pay off in major ways. His approach is simple: keep telling the truth, keep evolving, and stay focused on what matters.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about taking care,” Big X said.
